Circa 1933, Cathedral School began as an all-boys school on River Street under the administration of the Marianist Community. It was known as the "Free School," and later as Saint Francis School. In 1935 it was moved to the 1728 Nuuanu Avenue site and became known as Cathedral School. In 1956 the administration of the school was transferred from the Marianists to the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity from Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The school then became co-educational with the admission of seven girls. The administration of the school was transferred to a lay person in 1975, and the school continues to be staffed by lay persons.
